Best Of Breed #16 And A New Crowned Champion

The roar from the Chambray crowd resonated throughout the metal building housing the first show of the 2008 Fall Florida Dog Show Season at Deland Fl.

Minutes before, suspense hung heavy in the air as the champions entered the ring for the Best Of Breed competition, along with the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch from the just-completed Winners class competition.

Chambrays Hogan’s Hero Rocky had just racked up his 9th Winners Dog for 2 points, a great win against mighty competition, however not enough to propel him into the celestial zenith reserved for those dogs that are campaigned and win the prescribed 15 points and 2 majors that make them an AKC Champion. Going into this weekend of shows, Rocky had accumulated 12 points and 1 major and this day there was 1 dog shy of the required 20 dogs to make this a 3 point major win.

Yet, there was a glimmer of hope in the Best Of Breed competition, as the Winners Bitch had taken a 3-point major by defeating the required number of females that make up a major. Rocky would need to win over the Winners Bitch as the Best Of Winners and he would cross over and also be awarded a 3-point major.

The champions had marched into the ring led by Rocky’s sire, Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff (Hogan) with Jessica Herzon at the controls as Hogan’s designated handler. The lineup of champions was formidable with several Top 25 dogs in the mix.

Leading the pack around the ring, Hogan out-distanced himself by covering the best ground of the elite lineup. Bringing up the rear were the 2 class winners, the Winners Dog (Rocky) and the Winners Bitch. Now it was up to the judge for the day to pick out a BOB, a Best Of Winners and a Best Of Opposite Sex. The right combination for Rocky would be a

  • Best Of Winners over the Winners Bitch or more remotely
  • Best Of Opposite Sex  which would also earn him the required numbers for a major pointed win or
  • Best Of Breed over all the champions

The large crowd around ring 5, made up mostly of Chambray Partners Program owners were waiting to see their puppy’s sire, Hogan enter the ring. Of course everyone was rooting for Hogan to win yet another Best Of Breed, hopefully his 16th BOB. Most of these owners have a vested interest in that occurrence as Hogan is the sire of most of the Chambray dogs competing for their own championship points. Some of them also knew the game well enough to know that Rocky needed the right combination to earn enough points to finish his title on this given day and those folk collectively would hold their breath as the judge would go about doing her job.

The judge was very thorough in her assessment of the dogs before her; she would examine each as expected and would move each of the dogs in the lineup and move them again. Hogan and Jessie were at the top of their game and stood out heads and shoulders above the other participants and their handlers.

It became apparent that the judge was favoring Hogan for BOB and sure enough pulled him out first and sent him to the other side of the ring, a move that usually precedes being awarded the coveted Best Of Breed. She then pointed to Rocky to follow behind Hogan and then placed a special’s bitch behind them and made the whole lineup go around the ring one more time. As the dogs circled the ring one last time, the judge would point to Hogan as Best Of Breed and his son as Best Of Winners and the crowd would let out a collective sign of relief and a mighty roar that echoed through the makeshift canine arena.

Hogan’s BOB win now place him within 3 of tying the Chambray all time BOB record set by Ch Chambrays Caleb back in 1995.

Rocky’s new title, makes him Am/Int/BIS UKC Ch Chambrays Hogan’s Hero Rocky, making him the 22nd homebred champion for Chambray, adding one more to the existing state record of homebred champions.

Rocky's championship also gives Hogan and Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chance N Counter their 2nd champion for the year, following Ch Chambrays Charmed N Counter’s record setting finish at 16 month’s of age back in June. Rocky now becomes the youngest male Chambray champion, displacing Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Sir Lancelot who finished on his 2nd birthday.

We are now on a champion’s watch for another of Hogan’s and Connie’s offspring to finish before the year is out, which would give both major national bragging rights as 3 champions in 1 year by a male or female earns them Top Stud Dog honors and also Top Brood Bitch honors!

We have a couple of their kids that could conceivably finish their quest in the 3 months left for 2008. Int Ch Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks now has 7 points and Int Ch WinQuest Chambray Storm Warning Cane (Olivia's offspring) has 4 points to his credit. Plus there are several other kids from the class of 2007 and the class of 2008 that could make a run for the title as well.
