Chambrays Sequence of Success Follow-up

From time to time an article published to the Chambray Labradors website elicits added attention by our readers. Normally there is an increase of about 10% of emails following most articles published for the reading public. This usually comes out to about 10 or 15 emails per day requesting further information or some just adding their comments about the article, however a subject that strikes a chord with a larger number of readers will see a spike in the emails to go above 30 to 50 responses per day after it appears at the website.

Such is the case with the most recent offering at the website entitled Chambray Sequence of Success. The concurring train of thought from most that have emailed in has been for me to further explain how the sequence of success works using examples.

In order to simplify the process, I will document one particular series of co-ownerships and breedings that dates back to 1990 and is still functioning at the top levels of success with over a dozen people involved.

  • 1990 a breeding between Beaver Creeks Crystal Chambray produces a puppy heads and shoulders above anything ever produced at Chambray Labradors. The decision is made to “place” this puppy rather than to keep it as most breeders do, so “Keep the Best and Sell the Rest” is bypassed and our novel idea of “Breed the Best, then Place the Best” is enacted for the very first time. That puppy is placed with one of very first co-owners, the McGown family and together through or mentorship and management program it is taken to her AKC championship and in 1992 she becomes Ch Chambray Indian Summer.

  • 1993 Summer is co-bred with her owners and produces the most impressive litter ever. Out of that litter is born our first 2nd generation champion Ch Chambrays Caleb (our 1st Westminster qualifier 1995) and his littermate Chambrays Summer Rebel Amber which is the pick female show puppy. She is placed with the Senra family on a co-ownership for showing and breeding. Amber goes on to win 13 points and 3 majors, but wasn’t able to finish her championship after she produced one co-bred litter for Chambray.

  • 1997 Amber produces her one and only litter and the most spectacular puppy ever seen up to 1997 is born. Martha Chisholm is chosen to be her owner and to become another of Chambray’s owners.  Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey takes the shows by storm and easily wins her AKC championship and also a series of BOB’s shown as a champion.

  • 2001 Together with her owner, Chancey is co-bred and produces the best litter ever to date. All 3 of the puppies are placed in potential show homes with people that are specially chosen by Chambray to participate in the co-owners and co-breeders program. All 3 puppies easily and in dominating fashion attain their AKC champions. One of the puppies reaches USA Top 25 status and becomes Chambrays 1st Eukanuba qualifier and competitor. Another of the puppies competes at Westminster and the 3rd puppy becomes Chambrays first ever Best In Show Puppy winner!!!!! Those 3 girls go on to produce an astonishing 7 AKC champions between them. One of the puppies, BISP AKC Ch Chambrays Chance N Counter is placed with Jessie Herzon to become her Junior Handling dog and together they achieve for Jessie to become the #1 Labrador Retriever Junior Handler in the USA for 1994 and 1995

  • 2007 {February} Jessie’s puppy BISP AKC Ch Chambrays Chance N Counter “Connie” produces a co-bred litter for Chambray with another Chambray Sequence of Success dog, BIS Ch/Int BIS Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff. That Connie X Hogan litter becomes the best litter to date ever for show and in the litter are the highest rated male and female puppies ever for our breeding program. The top show pick male is placed with Neil Wasserman and Faith Bandklayder and he becomes our 4th Bred-By Exhibitor champion, Bred-By Exhibitor Ch/INT BIS Ch/UKC BIS Ch Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks, who now in 2012 is producing the absolute best puppies ever. The top female puppy in that litter, which also happens to be the top rated puppy either male or female is to be placed with one of our existing Chambray owners, Rosie Feeley who already owns our top dog of all times and the only Chambray dog to ever win an AKC Best In Show, BIS Ch/Int BIS Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff, “Hogan”. Although that puppy was reserved and raised for 6 months for Rosie, circumstances at the time made it impossible for Rosie to take her home with her and she would remain at Chambray with Jessie training her and ultimately showing her. AKC Ch/Int BIS Ch/UKC BIS Ch Chambrays Charmed N Counter would set the record for the youngest ever AKC champion by the time she was 17 months old. She would also become Chambray’s 1st ever AKC Grand Champion. From Connie’s 2nd litter bred to Hogan again in August of 2007, the famous 5 Divas Chambray litter is born, 5 top show quality female puppies. One of those puppies from the 2nd litter, Chambrays Eloquent N Counter is placed with long time Chambray owner Val Till.

  • 2011 Chambrays Eloquent N Counter “Ellie” is co-bred with Val and produces 2 of the top rated puppies ever; in fact both surpass their older sister Charm for that honor. Both puppies are placed with new Chambray owners, Olga and Juan Marrero on co-ownerships for showing and for breeding. As of April 22, 2012, those 2 puppies have dominated the wins in Florida, with Bred By Exhibitor (#5) Ch/Int BIS Ch Chambrays Celestial N Counter “Kika” becoming Chambrays youngest ever champion at 15 months and her sister Int BIS Ch Chambrays First N Counter “Gavi” following along with 7 points and 1 Best Of Breed win with very limited showing since she was put up until Kika finished her championship.

  • 20?? Kika and Gavi along with their owners the Marreros will perpetuate the great qualities that they each have received from Chambrays Sequence of Success by both producing the next generation of superior quality show puppies and through Chambray’s Puppy Placement Program, those puppies will be placed with potential new owners that will be part of the most successful Labrador Retriever ownership program in the country.

****Major News****1 week after this article was published to the website Kika was to win a Best In Show at the Vero Beach dog shows!!!!!!!!!!!!!She becomes only the 3rd Labrador Retriever born in Florida to ever win a Best In Show in Florida!!! She is the first-ever female Labrador Retriever to accomplish that feat and she is only 15 months old! She now wears the one of a kind title of AKC Bred-By Exhibitor BEST IN SHOW Ch Chambrays Celestial N Counter. Adding to the history making is that Kika has been totally breeder/owner/handled by Johanna Herzon since she was a puppy and has won all these awards and titles with her as her handler!

So a summary of the preceding looks like this.

  • 1987 Crystal is introduced at Chambray from Beaver Creeks Labradors

  • 1990 Crystal produces Summer

  • 1992 Summer & the McGown family produce Amber (1994)

  • 1994 Amber & the Senra family produce Chancey (1997)

Q. I have been following your successes at the dog shows for over a year and now I realize how your program works. How do you decide who receives one of your top show puppies.

A. There is a process that I follow in getting to know those interested in our puppies and what their involvement will be in the future with the puppy that is placed with them. After being contacted by a prospective new owner, I provide them with as much information as possible about dog ownership in general. I ask them to read through several articles and pages that are available at the website. Through subsequent email exchanges I determine what the interest level is of those inquiring and then offer them more in-depth information about the possibility of owning a show quality dog and the levels of activity that are available with a show puppy. The more interested the client becomes, the more information is made available them through emails, phone conversations and visitations with us at our home and also at dogs shows that we travel to.

Q. I just purchased a show puppy from a well-known top show breeder, I also live here in Florida, would you consider us for your program?

A. Yes, absolutely! We would need to get together and I would need to evaluate your puppy and also see the pedigree. We would also need to discuss your expectations and also I would need to explain to you all your options of involvement with the breed and with our program in particular. After the evaluation (hopefully a good outcome evaluation) and after explaining the alternatives available to you (should you accept to enter our programs), we would essentially be forming a working agreement for the future with your puppy.

Q. I own a champion stud dog, would you be interested in using him in your vast program of breedable females?

A. Email me photos and his pedigree. If he fits the need, then I would make the time to see him in person for a full evaluation and if that is all systems go, then we would come to some type of a working agreement for the use of his stud service. I could even advertise and promote him at our website that attracts over 700 visitors a day world-wide.

Q. We are looking for handling for our Labrador at the dog shows. Do you provide that service for dogs even though you didn't breed them?

A. Yes, we provide training, conditioning and handling to all dogs regardless of where they came from. We will only handle the best dogs that we feel will be competitive at the dog shows. We would need to set up an appointment for me to evaluate the dog for conformation and also to see how much training and conditioning he would need before you ever enter him in a show.

Q. I would like a great quality puppy, but I am not sure if I will be involved in showing or breeding. Do I qualify for one of your puppies?

A. After we exchange emails, phone conversations and a visit with me at the farm or at a dog show near you, you may have more information to base your decision to possibly own one of our show puppies. However we also make available those puppies that do not have the competitiveness to do well at dog shows and those we place as pet quality with the AKC Limited Registration. So, you could end up with a great quality puppy from us after all.

Q. How long is the wait for one of your puppies?

A. Very difficult to say and even harder to explain! First of all, we only have about 80 puppies available throughout the year!!!!!! Plus, I receive well over 1000 emails per year asking for our puppies! We have people waiting with very specific requests, such as a Black Show Female, or a Pet Chocolate Male and on and on.............so there may be a few people waiting for a certain color, a certain sex and a certain status. Some even will request a puppy out of a particular sire or dam.

What makes the wait even more confusing for some is that I won't know exactly what is available until the litter is 7 weeks old and I perform the all important temperament and show evaluations!!!!!!!

Oy Vey doesn't adequately explain the process................however if you are willing to wait for the best, you will have the best and hopefully your wait won't be longer that 6 months as the average wait is about 3 months!

Q. I have read through your website and there doesn't seem to be an end to it. You all offer so much in terms of training, support, mentorship and great quality puppies, there doesn't seem to be any other breeder that offers as much. You all are truly a one of a kind breeder. What commitment does it take from us to be considered for one of your puppies?

A. First of all you need to fully understand our mission with the breed and also our goals with each and every breeding that we put together. There are those that just do not get the concept of how we do things. The majority of people looking for a puppy are used to dealing with people that are only breeding dogs. These are breeders that have several females or a kennel full that they breed and produce puppies from. We prefer that each of the dogs that we use in our breeding program live in someone's home and are loved first and foremost as house hold companions. The fact that these family pets are also the absolute best show dogs in Florida by far and wide, makes them the absolute best dogs to perpetuate the breed by producing the next generation of Labrador Retrievers.

How those dogs become house hold companions is a result of our highly successful selection process of new owners, which in turn will become our co-breeders of the future to produce the absolute best show Labradors in Florida. So, having a valued understanding of the preceding is highly instrumental in being considered to be an owner of a Chambray Labrador puppy.

Reading all the available material at the website is a great way to enrich the learning process, communicating with us through email for more specific information would be the next logical step in the information gathering process, meeting with us personally to cover any and all pertinent questions is a must for those that live within the state.

These steps will enhance your chances of being selected to join us with the placement of one of our 80 or so puppies produced yearly from over 150 females that are part of our Chambray Labradors Owners Community.

Being able to work with us for the Betterment of the Breed is essential in order to be considered for ownership of a Chambray Labrador puppy. As the examples covered by this article, the Chambray Sequence of Success is paramount for the perpetuation of the superior quality produced by our novel and unique program for Labrador Retrievers and all the owners that have been part of this success story that now spans 2 plus decades!
