3 Best In Shows
11 New International Champions
May 2009

by Sandy Herzon

It is now Monday, May 4, 2009 and the IABCA show superintendent is well on his way home to the state of Oregon and all of the Chambray Labrador owners have also reached their safe harbor destinations from all points north, south, west and east in Florida after the 2 day, 4 shows at the Orlando International dog shows.

This venue has become the introductory grounds  for our newest puppies, the testing grounds for our up and coming youngsters and our crowning grounds for our sires and dams that are producing these outstanding individuals that are invited to attend and compete at the May and October IABCA dogs shows in central Florida.

The newest puppies, those born within the last year usually make their show debut at these shows, especially since the IABCA allows youngsters from 3 to 6 months compete in the Baby Class. Besides the puppies cutting their teeth here, their owners are also introduced to the world of showing dogs, or better said “having dogs shown for them”. Most of these puppies and owners hopefully will continue on into the AKC experience as their dogs reach the proper age and have been trained to perform.

Besides the Baby Class, those dogs aged 6 months to 18 months are classified as Puppies as well and are further divided into the 6 to 9 Puppy, 9 to 12 Puppy, and then the 12 to 18 Puppy Class. Dogs older than 18 months and not yet a champion will all compete in the Open Class. Many of these dogs are already competing at the AKC level, however these shows provide great hand’s on training to help tweak out inconsistencies with their in-ring performances. So these are also included in our “by invitation” roster.

For those owners that were new to the fast paced, often chaotic action this past weekend, I am sure questions still abound as to the activities and happenings that they have just witnessed. Although they were part of the experience; some of them have not connected the dots to the fast paced, helter-skelter ways of doing things at the International dog shows. With their interest still piqued and while it is still fresh in their memories, a small recap should prove very beneficial to them and to the many that could not attend this time around.

At the beginning the competition is divided by sex, first the males compete starting out with the 3 to 6 month olds. If there were more than 1 puppy in the class, the judge has to place them in the order of his preference. Then the judge performs an individual evaluation and writes out a critic for each participant before the steward calls in the next age group.

At these shows, WinQuest Chambray Major Rizzo (12/29/08) and WinQuest Captain Storm Along (01/29/09) would go head to head at all 4 shows. Major’s owners could not attend but would send him out with the Herzons for handling, while Storm would be handled by his owner Holly Grant. Holly and her husband Dean are brand new to the world of showing dogs; however they expressed a tremendous interest in having a show puppy and were paired up with the pick yellow show male from BISS Ch Hyspires Adrenaline Rush, bred to our Int Ch WinQuest Summer Storm (Olivia).

All 4 judges for the weekend gave rave reviews for both puppies awarding both the four SG1’s needed for their International title. Some shared with me that they had a tough time in choosing the eventual winner and made the decision based more on presentation than on actual quality. The first 3 judges awarded Major a 1st place, so for the 4th show, Holly graciously accepted my invitation to allow Ryan to handle Storm since I handled Major and of course Ryan the little whippersnapper would beat the old man and Storm won a 1st place over Major who is out of our own Int Ch WinQuest Storm Major (Jason) bred to Skyfire’s Totally Blond (Valerie).

Winning a class allows that puppy to come back for the eventual Best Of Winners Puppy competition held after both sexes have had all the classes judged. So Major would represent the Open 3 to 6 month old male puppy class for the 1st 3 shows and Storm would come back for winners in the 4th show from that class.

After the Baby Puppy Class, it would be the 12 to 18 month old class called into the ring and Int Jr Ch Chambrays I Walk The Line (Cash) owned by Jen and Chris Hupert and handled by Ryan would receive an SG1 at all 4 shows and also was awarded a 1st place in each show which enabled him to go back for Best Of Winners Puppy.

One of the biggest differences between the IABCA and the AKC is that the IABCA offers a Bred By Exhibitor Best In Show apart from the regular Best In Show, so puppies and dogs may be entered into either the regular classes which will lead to the regular Sporting Groups and then onto the regular Best In Show or into the Bred By Exhibitor classes which will lead to the Bred By Exhibitor Sporting Group, then to the Bred By Exhibitor Best In Show.

For these shows, Chambrays Sunny Daze (3 to 6 month Bred By) owned by Mary and Bob Jakeway and Int Jr Ch WinQuest Chambray Cadbury (12 to 18 month Bred By) owned by Nina and Edgar Otto were entered into the Bred By Exhibitor in the right age group. Both puppies were awarded their SG1’s at all 4 shows and also a first place from their respective class in each show. Allowing them to compete in the Best Of Winners  to determine Best Bred By Exhibitor Puppy.

In the Open Class, we handled 2 adult males, one an outside handling assignment not owned by those in the partners program and Buzz owned by a working associate. Charlotte’s Buzz About The Town is owned by Lynn Raber of South Carolina who is working with Chambray with both Buzz and Sake and the other dog is Silronray’s Vans the Man (Caspar) owned by Sylvia Leibrect of France took turns winning first place from the class, with Caspar winning 1st in show #1 and show #3 and Buzz winning a 1st place in show #2. These first place winners would advance into the Winners Dog competition to determine Best Of Breed Adult.

Once the males completed all their classes, the process starts anew with the female puppies. First the regular classes followed by the Bred By Exhibitor classes.

In the 3 to 6 month old regular classes we would feature Chambrays My Two Cents (Penny) owned by Jobe Galli. This chocolate girl comes from Chambrays Caramela and Wilcare's Leisure Suit Larry, one of the top chocolate producers in the country. Penny was awarded 3 1st places out of the 4 shows and would continue into the winners competition later on.

In the 3 to 6 month old Bred By Exhibitor we entered Chambrays Princess Baeli owned by Becky and Jim Karousatos from the breeding of Int Ch Chambrays Princess Kaeti bred to BISS Ch Chablais Brookhill Joss. Joss, the BIS at the 2008 Potomac is owned by Mary Beauduin Stirrett Orting of Brookhill Labradors in the state of Washington. Baeli would receive 3 first places out of the 4 shows allowing her to compete for winners and eventually for Best Bred Puppy.

In the adult competition for the females we featured 4 of our females, Int. Ch Chambrays Stella’s Desire, Chambrays Greenhead Cundiamor (Codi), both owned by Debra Richmond and Dave Baxter, Chambrays Alexandria Francis (Allie) owned by Joe and Michelle Sciascia and Moir's EHF Namazake now residing at Chambrays and co-owned with Lynn Raber of South Carolina.

All four girls would earn the 3 required V1’s for their adult International Champion’s title. Stella would win the class twice, with Allie and Codi each winning a first place apiece.

In the female Bred By Exhibitor Adult, we would feature Int Jr Ch Chambrays And The Beat Goes On (Cher) owned by Mary and Bob Jakeway. Cher would take a first place at all four shows earning her the International Adult Champion’s title and of course allowing her to compete for Best Bred By Exhibitor adult.

At the conclusion of judging for the regular classes and the Bred By Exhibitor classes of both sexes, the puppies that won a first place, both males and females in the regular puppy classes were called back into the ring to determine which one would be awarded regular Best Of Breed Puppy. Then the Bred By Exhibitors males and females first place winners are called in to decide a Best Of Breed Bred By Exhibitor Puppy. Finally, the regular Best Of Breed Puppy goes head to head against the Best Of Breed Bred By Exhibitor Puppy for top honors. If the regular puppy wins, he will go into the regular Sporting Group competition and the Bred By puppy will go compete at the Bred By Sporting Group, however if the Bred By puppy wins, he will compete at both the regular and the Bred By Groups.

Major and Cash and a puppy from another breeder went head to head for regular Best Of Breed puppy with Major winning 3 times and Cash winning it once.

Next all the bred By Exhibitor winners were called into the ring to compete for Best Bred By Exhibitor Puppy, with Sunny winning a 1st place in show #1, 2 and 4 and Cadbury winning a first in show #3 and then going on to win a Group 1 and a Best In Show.
