This section of our
Website is dedicated to all our visitors that have questions about our
Labradors and programs.
If you don't find an answer to your question,
please feel free to contact us with any inquiries
you may have. I
receive hundreds of emails on a weekly basis and most of those emails ask
very similar
questions about our programs, puppies and show handling.
Below you will find a representation of the most popular questions asked. |
|
"What are the
different programs that you offer?"
The Puppy Placement Program is a good place to
start.
This is a very crucial element for
success, the ability to evaluate and consistently select the top
individual
puppies from each litter. Then to take those show quality
puppies and place them into selected homes and
ownerships that will
perpetuate the successes that are now well into the 6th
generation. Puppies placed
through our system come with the entire
Guarantees,
Amenities
and
Training Packages,
not to mention
the Lifetime Support System
all of which are so highly sought after by breeders, exhibitors and new
owners.
The
Winning Edgeâ
Show
Management Program
By working with owners, breeders and
exhibitors
of all levels, we create the
Winning Edgeâ
in the show ring using the 4 elements needed for maximum success.
v
Conformational Quality
v
Performance Training
v
Competitive Conditioning
v
Top-Notch
Handling
The Show Management Program offers owners,
breeders and exhibitors of Labrador Retrievers a unique
opportunity to
take advantage of the services that are offered to create the
most competitive dogs at the dog shows.
By taking exceptional
Conformation
Quality
dogs and
Training
them to
Perform
to their very best,
then to raise the bar one level higher,
Condition
those same dogs to
Compete
“In working condition”
as the breed standard calls for and then to wrap it all up in one package with the absolute best presentation
through
Top-Notch
Handling,
you have
created the
Winning Edgeâ
That
is what the Show Management Program does, take a great example of the
breed, put into it the 27
years of
training experience that we have with Labrador Retrievers, then
condition the dog and hone it as if
it were an Olympic athlete and then
take it into the show ring with Florida’s most successful handling
program for Labradors in 2003, 2004,
2005 and 2006
v
Titled more Labradors (5) than any handler's
program in 2003
v
Pointed more Labradors (14) than any other
handling program in 2003
v
Titled more Labradors (4) than any handler's

“How does the Partner’s
Program work?”
The Partner’s Program For The Betterment
of the Breed encompasses all the aspects necessary for
producing,
placing and competing in the conformation ring with Labradors . Drawing on our 36-years
involvement with the breed, we provide the environment for beginners,
intermediates and advanced
fanciers to take advantage of our expertise
in all the areas necessary to be successful in the realm of
dog shows.
-
Breeding (the
Co-Breeders Program)
-
Placement (the Puppy
Placement Program)
-
Competition (the
Winning Edge® Show Management Program)
Through our innovative
Co-Breeders Program, top
conformation quality dogs participate in producing
the next generation
of winners. Owners of these superior quality Labradors choose to
participate in this
program to draw on the vast knowledge about
breeding, genetics and understanding of what is in the
pedigrees of top
producers. This program is open to anyone with a top conformation
Labrador, as each
dog is evaluated for those qualities and then must
pass all clearances before they are considered for the
program.
|
|
“Who can participate in
the Partner’s Program?”
The Partners Program for the Betterment of the
Breed is open to all who own or are looking to own
show
quality Labrador
Retriever and are into or would like to get into the dog show
end of the breed.
We provide the entire environment for beginners,
intermediates and even to advanced fanciers as each
may participate in as much or
as little as they choose to do. Some people may want to become handlers
themselves, while others would like to hand over the leash and watch from
ringside. There are those that
would like to breed their dog and have the
thrill of raising puppies, while others may not be so inclined or
have
the time and energy that puppies need and would rather have someone else do
the raising.
Our complete services in this area include:
-
Stud dog selection for the bitch
-
The actual breeding through natural breeding
or artificial insemination.
-
The well-care of the bitch in whelp
-
The actual birthing process
-
The raising of the pups to placement
-
The placement of the pups
-
All levels of training for the dogs
-
Handler’s training for those that wish to
handle their own dogs.
-
Total Show Management of the dogs, including
training, conditioning, traveling and presentation
at the shows.
-
Advertising and promotions
-
Stud Dog Management for male dogs.
Each person in the Partner’s Program is
treated individually according to need. Each Partnership is
unique according
to participation. The one thing that all have in common is the love for
the breed and the
desire to maintain the highest standards for the breed.
For more information on the different training and
conditioning programs
offered, go to the Winning Edge section.
The bottom line is that there are 3 ways
to go about competing at the dog shows and each one has its'
percentages of
success.
-
Do It Yourself
method - here the breeder and/or owner shows up
in the ring with a Conformational
Quality dog, has
Trained the dog to
Perform, has Conditioned the dog to a
Competitive level and can
match their
Top-Notch Handling Skills against the top handler/professionals
in the business. Very
rewarding
when you ever win.
Success Rate: Hit & Miss, mostly Miss & Miss
-
The Handed Over
To A Professional method - here you realize that the competitive
end of the
business is way beyond your level of training, conditioning and
skillful handling and you let a professional
handler ply his trade with your
dog. This is very costly and not as rewarding.
Success Rate: Good and Costly
-
The Partner's
Program method - here you join in with the most successful
program for winning
(most Labradors titled and most Labradors pointed in
2003 in Florida and once again in 2004 & 2005 and again in 2006!!!). Very
rewarding to be part of a successful effort for the
Betterment of the Breed and of course consistent winning
has its merits.
Success Rate: The Best (Florida)

“How does someone know
if they would benefit from the
Partners Program?”
There is nothing more concrete and solidifying than
testimonials from those that have benefited from this unique
format for
the Betterment of the Breed. The best advertising in the world is "word
of mouth" from satisfied clients.
Consult with any of the associates
listed in the Partners Program Directory,
some of these fine folk have been with
the program for years, some for
over a decade!
There are many levels and forms at which partners and associates
participate in. The following are just a few examples
of the different
arrangements with some of the associates in the program.
- Placement of a New Puppy
- the purchase of a Show Potential puppy from the Puppy Placement
Program is the most common way to join in on the Partners Program.
Each of these highly sought after
puppies comes with the most complete
owner's package ever offered by a breeder. These include;
Show
Quality Guarantee, Lifetime
Temperament Guarantees, Genetic Guarantees, Health Guarantees,
Micro
chip and Lifetime Lost & Found Notification Network, Lifetime Support
System, Unlimited
Training Classes, Unlimited Private At-Kennel
Training, Unlimited Handlers Training, CGC
Training & Testing,
discounts on all Basic &
Advanced Obedience Training and our exclusive
Travel/Care/Handling
Package. The entire New Owners Package is listed
elsewhere on the Website and
is always available for download. It is
cast in stone, in bold letters for all to see and read. No fine print
and
very few exceptions. Our goal is to produce the absolute
best in soundness, temperament and in
conformational quality our
mission is to guarantee and support those puppies for their
lifetime.
- Placement of a
Developed Dog
- the placement of a started, developed
Show Quality dog is
another way new and existing associates benefit
from the Program. There are several ways that we arrive
at these
"started dogs.
- 1) Exceptional puppies from high-potential litters are kept and
"Grown Up" at our home with the Development
program. These puppies are
trained and conditioned until the right situation comes along for the
them and then
placed with those individuals that value the
Conformational Quality, the Performance Training and the
Competitive
Conditioning of the dog.
- 2) Exceptional puppies/dogs from our associate's breeding programs
are brought into the training,
conditioning and handling environment
until they have reached a high level of competitiveness and then
placed with interested individuals that recognize and appreciate a top
conformational show dog that has
been trained and conditioned with the
Winning Edge program.
- An Owner's Dog -
these are dogs already owned by owners, breeders and exhibitors who
wish to take
advantage of all the different programs offered by
the Partner's Program. These dogs are evaluated for
Conformational
Quality and may be accepted into the program according to their value
for the Betterment
of the Breed and their potential contribution to
the Partners Program. They may participate in any or all of
the
programs offered, from Training, Conditioning, Handling to Breeding
and Placement of the puppies.
- Professional Handling & Presentation of Dogs
- We offer our services to Conformational Quality
dogs worthy of being
in the show ring, that can be competitive and that have the potential to
be winners with the
right management team behind them. We show dogs from
all kennels and breeders from across the country, as
each is given the
absolute best in Training, Conditioning and in Top-Notch handling.
|
|
“ I bought a show
quality dog from a show kennel, can I have it
evaluated for participation
in the Partners Program ?” Conformational Quality
is of the utmost importance in our consideration of a dog into the
Program, however soundness
is paramount before we decide whether a dog
will contribute to the Betterment of the Breed. The dog should have
all
its clearances appropriate for its age. Hip and elbow X-rays and eye exams
should be performed, before spending
time and energy in pursuing any
activities in either showing or breeding. On puppies and young dogs,
simple evaluations
are performed to determine any structural deviations or
actual faults. On dogs older than a year old, a very thorough
examination
and evaluation will be performed. The statistics here for a dog to receive
a favorable evaluation is not very
high, only 1 out of 10 brought to us
actually receives a thumbs up, with very few getting the 2 thumbs up that
I would
consider to be a dog worthy of perpetuating the breed by either
competing at the dog show level or by breeding to
produce the next
generation of Conformational Quality dogs. |
|
“ I
am a bit cautious
about contracts." Oh, did I mention that there are no
contracts. Yes, you read right, NO CONTRACTS. Each and every participating
partner, associate, co-breeder and client need not have a contract to have
a WORKING AGREEMENT with us. A Working Agreement is very simple and
works on the premise that whatever we work on together will be for the
Betterment of the Breed
- we work together on a project as long as
all involved are benefiting.
- we do what we each says they are going to
do
- we take all the due credits together when
we succeed
- we remain loyal throughout the entire
process
Associations and Partnerships work as long as those involved make
them work. It is a 50-50 Proposition, you get
what you put into it. One
thing is 100% for sure with each and every one of the Working Agreements
that I am part of:
- I always will do my part.
- I will always do what I say I will do.
- I will always look out for your benefit
in the arrangement
- I will always be loyal to each and every
Partner and Associate.
For Partnerships to work, the 50-50 Proposition has to work both
ways. The participant must do their part, so the
following is vital:
- Total understanding of the project is a
must.
- Once put into motion, the Game Plan
must be followed.
- The Working Agreement is only between
the 2 parties at hand....ALL others have OTHER agendas!
- Loyalty to the Partnership is
paramount.
Any deviations to any of the numbered criteria, especially 5
through 8 could cause the ship to stray of course or worse
yet, sink
it entirely! I wish that I could tell you that all Working
Agreements and Partnerships have sailed on to new discoveries,
but
that's not reality.
- Lack of understanding of the project
is sometimes an issue because of the complexities of the
Dog Show
World, so some due clarifications along the way might be in order.
Since some of the
associates are new to the dog world scene at
times they are given contradictory and confusing
information by
others outside the Partners Program. It is at this time that
clarifications are in order.
- Straying of course sometimes delays
the journey, making it a longer one than planned. All sorts of
obstacles will present themselves along the journey. The ability
to assess and make the necessary corrections will straighten out
most route deviations.
- The Dog Show World is a
"DOG EAT DOG"
environment and there are a lot of dogs out there!
I need not say
more about this criteria.
- Lack of Loyalty has sank many a
ship..........this is one that I am very particular about these
days.
If I am to commit to a working relationship with anyone, I
expect that person to commit to the
relationship in a like manner.
Since the Partners Program commits to
many different people, all with the Betterment of the Breed in
mind, preservation of the entire program is important. An
individual within the program, needs to be able
to maintain the
proper decorum to be representative of the mission: Betterment of
the Breed, first and
foremost.
So, for those folk that giving their "word" still means
something, like in the good old days, then this is the place to
come and share our passion and expertise on the breed, where
together we can make a difference for the
Betterment of the Breed.

“
We are
totally new to show dogs ."
"We are
beginners"
"I have a few dogs"
"I have been breeding Labradors
for a while now" Say no more, in the last 36 years
with Labradors I have been down all these roads myself. These are
statements that repeat themselves countless times by E-mail, at
the dog shows and by phone from hundreds
of interested people a
year. The only difference with my experiences is that the levels
of communications were
in the dark ages back in the 70's and 80's
when I first started with Labradors. Also, to be honest, there
were
very few breeders with the capacity or expertise to offer all
that is offered through our Partners Program. So it
makes no
difference at what level anyone is right now to be able to take
advantage of the different programs that
comprise the Partners
Program. We have people join us that are just getting started
and we several breeders that have been into Labradors for
20 years
or more. There are several people that have been with the program
a decade or more, while we have
several that just started out with
a "show puppy". All have one several things in common:
- Love for the breed
- An interest in learning
- Joining a winning program
- All for the betterment of the breed
|
|
“ I am a bit confused
about the different type of kennels and
breeders. What is a "backyard
breeder",
a "hobby breeder" a "show breeder,
a "Champion breeder" ?”
I am as confused as you are! Anyone can buy a dog and make up a kennel
name and be in business all in the same
day. Worst yet, they can set up a
website and make any claims they want about their dogs, their activities
and their
accomplishments , be it true or not and actually get away with it as there
is no policing any of these rogue sites and breeders .
Buying a dog is truly a
Buyer Beware situation.
If there were any type of regulations regarding the types of breeders
and kennels, here would be my suggestions to
the regulating entity.
- To be listed as a BREEDER the registrant must provide proof
that they have an understanding of the breed
standard for that breed
that they are perpetuating. That the breeding stock is registered with
an industry
accepted, authentic registration service (AKC, UKC, CKC, UK
KC or other acceptable entity) and that
they are in good standing with
those organizations. That the breeding stock has the minimum clearances
for
the breed (OFFA, CERF and the like). That registration papers are
provided with each puppy and that written
guarantees are also provided
with each puppy.
- A SHOW BREEDER must be able to prove that their breeding
stock has been shown and has actually won
points or certificates at a
real dog show against real competition.
- A CHAMPION BREEDER must have produced a champion of their own
breeding.
- A FIELD BREEDER must prove that they are actively engaged in
Hunt Test or Field Trials.
Merely having a fieldy-looking Labrador does not constitute a FIELD
BREEDER, nor does having attended a
dog show constitute a SHOW
BREEDER. Buying a champion dog does not make a person a CHAMPION
BREEDER.
These are accomplishments that have to be earned and not simply
self-attributed. If I were in the market for a
television, I certainly
would not want to purchase it from a backyard sale, nor from someone
selling as a hobby.
I would go to the most professional establishment in
my area. Likewise, if you are in the market for a puppy, you
should
research for the most qualified BREEDER, with the highest credentials,
guarantees and knowledge about
the breed.
I just purchased a
pick of the litter "show quality puppy"
What should I expect at the dog shows with this dog?
Your expectations can be no higher
than the success rate that the breeders that you obtained the
dog from have achieved themselves! If you purchased a puppy from someone
that doesn't show or has never championed a dog themselves, how could
you expect anything different from a dog that they sell! The "pick of a
litter" is totally meaningless if the parents are "run of the mill
quality". The odds are so against any puppy from mediocre parents
achieving any success as a show dog, that you would be better of buying
lottery tickets!
The quality of the dog is the direct result of the person behind the
kennel. |

1. Yes, all our puppies come with
AKC Puppy Registration papers. We
also have our dogs registered with
the UCI International organization, in
order to show outside the country. I
understand that there are
numerous registry services offering certificates
for litters that can not be registered with the AKC.
There are also a
couple of legitimate, alternate registries that offer obedience, agility,
field, herding,
conformation and other breed-related events. The value of
"registration papers" are only worth what
the registering organization's
merits are and the value to the breeds they represent. Back

2. We breed exclusively for show
purposes. All our litters are planned to produce the next generation of
show puppies. Those puppies are sold with Full, Open registration as "SHOW
POTENTIAL" for $1500/$1800 plus stud services back
from the males and $1500/$1800 for females puppies with 1 puppy back from a
future litter. These Show Potential puppies come with the most extensive
Puppy Package ever offered by a breeder. Click the following hyperlink to

Puppy Placement Program
Those puppies from a show litter that do not have
the potential to be competitive in the show ring are sold with the AKC's
Limited Registration for $1250/$1350. They also come with a limited owners
package, also listed at the previous hyper linked page. Back

6. I obtained my first Labrador Retriever back in
1969 and had my first litter in 1973. 35 years later
the passion and love for the breed glows brightly, as my entire life is
devoted to all aspects of the breed, from raising the occasional litter to
training hundreds of Labradors a year. Today, we have the distinction of
being the #1 breeder of owner/handled champions from the state of Florida.
Back to Q6 |
|
|
7. Since 1973, I have had about
50 litters of Labrador puppies or about an
average of less than 2 per year. Since 1998, we have had 13 litters with
that many champions produced in the same time period. Today, together with
the Partners Program which encompasses about 20 co-breeders, owners and
exhibitors, we are averaging 3 litters a year.

|
8. There are thousands of Labrador Breeders
across the country. A search on Google or any other search engine will
bring up an endless array of kennel names bearing "Labradors" as the
suffix. Among those countless names are all types of people breeding for
all types of reasons. The quality (or lack of) of puppies is as endless as
the names advertising themselves as Labrador breeders. At my training
facility, I see the results of buying puppies based on the "lowest
price" that the buyer could find. It is sometimes sad to see these
puppies grow up with all kinds of conformational deviations, not to
mention the physical problems encountered when breeders have no regards
for conformational quality, clearances and temperament in their pursuit
for monetary gains. The prospective puppy buyer should not use the
criteria of price as the determining factor of whom they buy the puppy
from. The prospective puppy buyer should demand to see OFA and eye
clearances of the puppy's parents, they should demand to have written
guarantees to cover any health or genetic problems that might be
encountered as the puppy grows. Yes, there are differences in the prices
that breeders charge for their puppies, but as the old saying goes, "In
the end, you get what you pay for" Back to Q8 |

|
9. In every competitive endeavor there is a
#1, that is the nature of competition, you have winners
and you have losers. In baseball, the slugger that belts out the most
homeruns in a year is the "home run king". In football, the runner that
that rushes for the most yardage in a year is the Top Rusher. For
dog breeders, the one with the most home-bred champions is the Top
Breeder, the one with the Top Labrador could also claim Top Status, the
one that wins the most Best of Breeds can justify the claim, the one that
wins the most at the dog shows might also lay claim to Top Breeder. In
Florida, Chambray Labradors is all of the preceding. Anyone can claim
anything, proving the claims is another thing. Our motto is
"SUCCESS IS
MEASURED BY RESULTS" and we document each and every claim with verifiable
statistics.
In Florida, Chambray Labradors is the #1 Breeder of
Owner/Handled Home-Bred Champions
with 19 AKC champions and 22 International champions. No other breeder has bred more champions than our kennel,
meet our champions at Wall of Champions
.
Another
criteria that might be used to indicate the ranking of a breeder at the
dog shows, might be the ranking of their dogs.
#1 Labrador In Breed From Florida
For the 2004 AKC/Eukanuba National
Championship Invitational
Am/Nat Ch Chambrays Twist of Fate is the #1
Labrador from the state of Florida, another #1 ranking for Chambray.
#1 Labrador In Sporting Groups From Florida The DOG NEWS
Top Ten Rankings for the Sporting Groups,
Am/Int
Ch Chambrays Mad About CGC
is ranked #11 in the country and #1 in Florida, yet
another 1st.

10. This is a major bench
mark question from hundreds of emails that I receive. Most of those
asking feel that the number of champions, somehow defines the quality of
the dogs produced. Well, for the record, there have been 19 home-bred
Chambray champions, plus another 6 Labs that were bought or were accepted
into the handling programs that have been titled by Chambray. What makes
this number of champions so special, is that they were all owner/trained
and handled. That is a state record for Florida. We have also titled more
International champions than anyone else in the state, with 22
International champions in the last 2 years alone. Back to

|
11. Besides being top
breeders, we have raised the bar for competition in the conformation
ring with training, conditioning and handling at the highest level. As
part of the Partners Program, we bring in top-notch, high quality
Labradors from reputable breeders and provide all our services to those
dogs. This is all done with the "Betterment of the Breed in mind".

12. Yes, we are involved in many
other events, including obedience, working
certificates, the AKC's Canine Good Citizen program, UCI International
Shows and tracking tests. We also sponsor the South East Florida Labrador
Rescue and Relocation Project and the Paws With A Cause organization.

13. With the advent of shipping semen
overnight from almost anywhere in the world, the
ability to procure the absolute best stud dogs has become paramount in the
quest for leaps and bound improvement to our gene pool. Of even greater
importance, is the use of the Internet to acquire information on stud dogs
and what they are producing right now! We no longer have to wait 8 or 10
years to see what a dog is capable of producing, now we see what a dog can
produce before he is even 2 years old!! Our carefully selected females are
paired up with compatible stud dogs to produce world-class puppies.

|
14. There are several ways to join the
Partners Program. Most people enter
Partners Program when they purchase a Show Potential Puppy and choose to
participate in the various programs offered for the Betterment of the
Breed. Some members are participating with a Labrador that they obtained
from a top kennel and now want the best in conditioning, training and
handling for their dog. There are some established breeders that have
joined in order to be part of a winning program and bring about
improvement and titles to their kennels. Back to Q14 |

15.Since 1985 and prior to 2001 we stayed mostly
in the Florida area and had not traveled outside to
either all-breed or to specialties. In 2001, the South Florida Labrador
Retriever Club held its inaugural specialty and we supported the club with
25 of our Labradors there. As one of the founders of the SFLRC back in
1989, we have supported the entries each year that the club has been
sanctioned to hold the event. Today, we travel into Georgia and South
Carolina and show dogs at as many all-breeds that we can travel to. We
hope to be attending the Greater Atlanta Labrador Retriever Club's
specialties, now that they have moved away from the same weekend as the
SFLRC event. Back to Q15 |

16. This is one of the most asked
question that I receive from show breeders and
exhibitors. As a breeder, I have been very fortunate to have had numerous
bred-by dogs that were exceptional as described by the breed standard and
they were also very successful as show dogs by earning their titles. I
would have to mention one of our first champions, Ch Chambrays Indian
Summer (1993) and her son Ch Chambrays Caleb (1995), followed by Caleb's
grandson, Ch Chambrays Franco as being among the exceptional dogs
from our kennel. The top dog from Chambray has to be Summer's
granddaughter, Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey CGC who had a brilliant show
career with 9 Best of Breeds and 5 Group Placements PLUS, her
contributions as a brood bitch will be hard to match, as she is the dam of
4 AKC champions. She also has 5 International champions to her credit.
One of her daughters, Karley is ranked #1 from all Labradors in Florida in
the 2004 Eukanuba Championship and her other daughter, Maddie is ranked
the #1 Labrador in the Sporting Groups in Florida. Back to

17. Great question! People assume that I only
breed for yellow and that all our champions are
yellows. Well, the truth be told, my favorite color in Labradors is the
traditional black! Plus we have 2 black champions on our Wall of Fame, Ch
Chambrays Silver Storm and Ch Chambrays Princess Kenya and we have 1
chocolate champion, Ch Chambrays Duchess. We now have several young black
boys and girls that will be vying for points at the dog shows. Back to Q17 |

18. My sole purpose in breeding is to
produce top-of-the-line, show
competitive Labradors. Unlike other breeders, I do not keep the best from
each litter, rather I find prospective show homes for these elite puppies.
I want my best produce to go out to the dog shows and win! So much so,
that I back these Show Potential puppies with a replacement guarantee if
they do not turn out to be show competitive!!!!! I also include the most
comprehensive amenities, guarantees and training package found anywhere in
the world, plus we even offer our services in handling those dogs to their
title. So, I will place the best, I
will guarantee them to be show competitive, I will provide a complete
owners package and I will even handle the dogs to be winners.

19. You have a choice. When I first started with
Labradors back in 1969, there were not too many
places to go to learn about the breed, showing or training. It was every
man for himself or woman for herself. It took me years to really get
going. I made many mistakes. I went backwards more often than forward. I
vowed that if someday I was in a position to make a difference with the
breed, that if I could help those to not make the mistakes that I made and
waste the years that I did going through the learning process, well......
that's what the Partners Program is all about!
Helping beginners, intermediates and even working
with advanced hobbyist for the betterment of the breed. To avoid the many
mistakes made by those that have no guidance so that the breed prospers.
1969 to 2005 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
So
you have a choice when you purchase one of our puppies. You may draw on
the 35 years experience with Labradors and get as much from the program as
you need or as little as you need. Back to Q19 |

We have a total "open
door" policy.
Our commitment to the breed extends way beyond those puppies we produce.
Our programs embrace Labradors from other breeders near and far.
This we call the Partners Program
for the Betterment of the Breed.
