The Great Class of 2007, Where Are They Now?

An addendum as been added to this article due to the tremendous response from our visitors and readers asking about other puppies from the Class of 2007. In the body of the article any additions made will be in this color and are dated April 12th 2008 and at the end of the article additional dogs are profiled as well in this same color font.

They have been labeled the “New Kids On The Block”, and the “The Great Class of 2007”; lauded as the best puppies in 37 years of breeding by Chambray Labradors, with many of those puppies receiving evaluation ratings that placed some of them in the Top 10 of all times. I wrote extensive articles using these wonder kids as a reference to explain the evaluation system*……….so have the expectations been met? Have they gone the way of brilliant sunsets and blazing comets or does the shine and luster still persists now that they are a year old?

Was all the hoopla warranted or was it an inflatable balloon of promotions and self-serving advertising as some critics have assailed since I began to document their arrival? Does all the “talk” match the litmus paper “walk” that is a must to prove the hype?

Well, we will let those reading this article be the judge and jury.

What set many of these puppies apart from previous year’s production were the high evaluation scores that were recorded by so many of them. In fact, 3 of those puppies scored higher than any other puppy had ever posted going back to Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey in 1997. Maybe more astonishing was that there were 14 puppies from that illustrious group that achieved scores that would place them in the Top 25 High Rated Puppies of all times!

Let’s present the facts using one of the litters from that awesome group of puppies born in 2007.  This is the Fantastic Four litter from Hogan and Connie.

Those initial ratings are well documented in several articles that I wrote way back when they were just 5 week’s old, then at 8 weeks and then a follow-up article at 6 month’s of age. Now that litter is 13 month’s old let’s see where they are now and if the hype and hoopla was warranted.

Chambrays Charmed N Counter started out as the highest rated 8-week old puppy ever. She had surpassed her grandmother Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey’s 96.21 high score set in 1997 with a mind boggling 97.37!

Does Charm pass the litmus paper test? Does she at 13 month's of age warrant the highest rating at 8 week's of age of any puppy ever born at Chambray. Follow Mitch Miller's bouncing ball below and you decide!

  • Best Puppy in Match at her very first match.
  • 2 Best Bred By Exhibitor Labrador at 2 AKC shows, while a puppy going against adult females in the Bred By Exhibitor Class.
  • More importantly she already is major-pointed; having won her first points at 7 month’s of age, a 3-point major which makes her the youngest Chambray Labrador to win a major-pointed show.
  • A month later she added 2 more points with a Winners Bitch at the Miami Dog Shows in December of 2007.
  • At the first shows of 2008 at the Boca Raton dog shows February 23rd she took Winners Bitch & Best Of Winners.
  • She followed that great win the next day with another of epic proportions going Winners Bitch, Best Of Winners and an astonishing Best Of Breed over 2 specials, one of those her sire Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff, the #18 Labrador in 2007 USA!!!!!
  • Has won the Bred By Exhibitor 90% of the time even as a puppy.
  • Winners Bitch at the West Palm Beach Dog Show March 8th
  • To add to her record setting ways, besides being the youngest to win a major-pointed show, she is now the youngest Best Of Breed winner for Chambray!
  • As of March 13th 2008, she has a total of 11 points and 1 major, well on her way to become the youngest ever champion for Chambray Labradors.
  • As of April 12th 2008 she now has 13pts and 1 major and now must wait until there are major pointed shows

How does her ratings scores of today compare with that high benchmark score at 8-week’s of age? You be the judge!

Let’s take Charm’s littermate, Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks who posted the 2nd highest rating in 37 years, right behind Charm’s score with an amazing 96.96. Has he lived up to the highest rating for a male puppy in all those years of keeping records?

  • As a junior puppy at the International shows, he went all the way to Best In Show Puppy competition, coming away with a Reserve Best In Show twice.
  • International Baby and Junior Champion
  • He was Best Labrador Puppy at the Ft Myers Dog Match in May of 2007.
  • More recently he became the youngest male dog from Chambray to win points, winning Winners Dog at the Saturday Boca Raton Dog Show in February 2008
  • and then followed that up with another Winners Dog win the following day for a total of 4 points for the weekend.
  • As of April 12 2008, Bailey wins his 3rd Winners Dog at St Pete and now has a total of 5 pts

A third puppy from the same litter as Charm and Bailey is UKC/Int Jr Ch Chambrays Hogan’s Hero Rocky that also received stratosphere-type numbers at his 8-week evaluation. Rocky’s score would propel him into the 4th highest rating for an 8-week old male puppy ever, clocking in at 95.78. How does he stack up today at 13 months of age (March 2008) and how has he fared so far in his show career?

  • International Baby Champion
  • International Jr. Champion
  • A BEST IN SHOW at a UKC show
  • UKC Champion
  • The Purina’s 2007 Breeder’s Showcase BEST LABRADOR PUPPY & Sporting Group 1
  • 6 Best Labrador Puppy In Match & 6 Group Placements In Match
  • 3 Reserve Winners Dog at AKC shows
  • Winners Dog & Best Of Winners West Palm Beach for 2 points
  • As of April 12, Rocky wins 2 more Winners Dog and Best Of Winners at Perry Georgia and now has 4 points

Need we say more about Rocky’s status? You be the judge!

So, was the hype and hoopla warranted about these puppies? Was the drum beating merely a serve serving promotional gimmick as some of the outside critics have continuously been chirping about on the sidelines?

I think NOT!

Facts and statistics don’t lie as they serve as a measuring stick of either success or failure and armed with the above multitude of overwhelming data it can well be surmised that all the fanfare was more than well-deserved and that the best is yet to come for even more of the puppies from the Great Class of 2007!

April 12th 2008 Addendum

We have received numerous emails asking about other high scoring puppies from the Class of 2007. Here is a partial recap of some of those other high ratings achievers and where they are today.

  • UKC/Int Jr. Ch Chambrays Barefoot Buddy CGC (94.44) - Sired by Int Ch Carmays Duststorm At Chambray with 12 points 1 major and 2 Best Of Breeds dam is Chambrays Merengue At Greenhead (daughter of Am/Int Carmays Ruff Around The Edges, aka. Today his high scores still stand at 15 months of age and with very limited showing has earned his International junior's title and now is also competing at UKC events and has taken a Best Of Breed and Group 1 at the most recent UKC even in April 2008 and earned his UKC champion's title in 3 shows. Buddy has been in training for the Therapy Dog certificate and eventually will go into our K9 For Kids school reading programs and also the hospital visitation programs and ultimately into the Service Dog program.

  • Int Jr Ch Chambrays Jewel In The Ruff CGC (93.1) - Sired by BISS Ch Ghoststones Louie Downtown, dam is Am/Int Ch Surry's Obscured By Clouds.
